Laurence Eldred started is own retail business in Essex in 1953. A family man with two sons and a daughter, he dedicated is life to creating a major family business. Thus forming the Eldred Group of Companies.
Although he started his business in Essex, he now operates from Spitalfields market. Mr Eldred utilised his Potato merchants licence to develop the business of supplying produce to the London wholesale markets trading then under the name of Booker Hart Ltd.
Eldred Group currently employs over 100 staff, the more active companies in Yorkshire being Ruane Potatoes, Eldred Transport and Eldred Holdings (1982) Ltd. These companies are a success story in themselves and each continues to expand.
Ruane Potatoes was acquired from Owen Ruane in 1968, a substantial business importing and exporting potatoes. This acquisition played an important role in the future of the company and its area of development. This keystone laid the foundation of the group's current activities of importing goods and services throughout the world.
Martin Eldred, the eldest son of Laurence, is also a family man. His wife Kate although kept busy with their three children is also actively involved in the business, and visits the office frequently helping in various roles.
Martin runs the sites in Doncaster which are currently based at Hexthorpe, Kirk Sandall and Hatfield (the latter being the Head quarters).
He handles the procurement and direct marketing side of Ruane and has found that the specifications demanded by customers are becoming more and more precise by the season.
Eldred Holdings (1982) Ltd has large warehousing facilities both at Hexthorpe Trading Park and Kirk Sandall operating 350,000 sq ft of warehousing from units varying in size from 1000 sq ft to 45,000 sq ft.
In more recent years Martin has given more concentration to renting out warehouses and offices. This has proved to be a very sought after requirement, thus the necessity to create more facilities at Carrside Park in Hatfield.
We provide units with racking for order picking to bulk storage, plus computerised stock control, quality control, labelling, and rework.
Eldred Transport Ltd evolved as a necessity and has become an entity in its own right. Our personalised service is tailor made to suit each customer's needs. This may range for example, from running their accounts, sales and marketing down to the provision of container traffic from overseas. In between, we offer a palletised, bulk movement, or parcel storage and delivery service.
